ISLANDS, the third feature film by director and German Film Award winner Jan-Ole Gerster ("Oh Boy", "Lara"), will celebrate its world premiere as a "Berlinale Special" as part of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The leading roles in the international production, filmed on Fuerteventura, are played by Sam Riley ("Radioactive", "Control"), Stacy Martin ("The Brutalist", "Nymphomaniac") and Jack Farthing ("The Riot Club", "Spencer").
Tom (Sam Riley) works as a tennis coach in an all-inclusive hotel on Fuerteventura. What at first glance appears to be the dream of never-ending summer has long since become a monotonous routine for the former professional. While the tourists come and go in an endless stream, he plays hundreds of balls over the net week after week and fills the void with fleeting affairs and alcohol.
But then the mysterious Anne (Stacy Martin) appears at the hotel. She, her husband Dave (Jack Farthing) and their seven-year-old son Anton (Dylan Torrell) do not fall in line with the image of the usual all-inclusive package tourists. Tom soon gets closer to the family: he gives Anton tennis lessons and invites them on an excursion to show them the rugged beauty of the island. The next day, Dave disappears without a trace. Anne's behavior, which puzzles Tom, is just as mysterious as Dave's disappearance. A suspicion begins to grow in him...
ISLANDS was directed by Jan-Ole Gerster ("Oh Boy", "Lara"), who co-wrote the screenplay with Blaz Kutin and Lawrie Doran. The leading roles are played by Sam Riley ("Radioactive", "Control") as Tom and Stacy Martin ("The Brutalist", "Nymphomaniac") as Anne, with further roles including Jack Farthing ("The Riot Club", "Spencer") and up-and-coming actor Dylan Torrell. The cinematography is by Juan Sarmiento G. ("Amparo", nominated for the Camera D'Or), the production design by German Film Award-winner Cora Pratz ("I'm Your Man", "The People vs. Fritz Bauer"), and the costume design by Christian Röhrs ("The Teachers' Lounge"). The sound recordings are by Stefan Soltau ("Babylon Berlin").
ISLANDS is a production of augenschein Filmproduktion (Maximilian Leo, Jonas Katzenstein) in co-production with LEONINE Studios and Schiwago Film.
