In a time of upheaval between two world wars, a number of very different people embark on the remote and hitherto uninhabited Galapagos island of Floreana, in search of a new life beyond the conventions of civilization. The first ones are the German doctor and philosopher Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) and his lover Dore Strauch (Vanessa Kirby). Ritter is writing a philosophical manifesto and also wants to heal Dore's multiple sclerosis. After some time, the press gets wind of the unconventional couple and inspires the World War I veteran Heinz Wittmer (Daniel Brühl), together with his son Harry and his young wife Margret (Sydney Sweeney), to follow suit. At first still inexperienced in dealing with the forces of nature, they gradually get better and better at it.
The harsh rejection by Ritter and Dore gives way to a slow rapprochement. Until one day the capricious Eloise Wehrborn de Wagner-Bosquet (Ana de Armas), a mysterious self-proclaimed baroness, appears on the island. In her entourage she has two men who are her lovers. The baroness has big plans to build a luxury hotel on the island and tries by all means to play the others against each other and force them to leave the island. Vanity, manipulation and human greed dangerously escalate the fragile coexistence, until events spiral out of control...
