On January 25th, MET LIVE IM KINO kicks off the New Year with an absolute highlight: Verdi's masterpiece AIDA, whose popularity remains unbroken.
Giuseppe Verdi was almost 60 when he composed AIDA. He had actually intended to retire when the Viceroy of Egypt asked him if he could write an opera for the opening of the Cairo Opera House. Verdi agreed and created with his AIDA an absolute pinnacle of opera history. Mass scenes like the Triumphal March, but also intimate scenes like the farewell of Aida and Radamès, have been delighting audiences and touching the souls of opera fans ever since.
The cast is outstanding, with soprano Angel Blue in the title role, tenor Piotr Beczala as Radamès, and mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi as Amneris. The supporting roles are also impressive: the authoritative bass Morris Robinson as the King and the great Verdi baritone Quinn Kelsey as Aida's father Amonasro. On the podium is the musical director of the Met, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who leads the orchestra energetically through Verdi's score.
Michael Mayer's new production of Verdi's AIDA is convincing with a brilliant approach and shows how to deal with an opera that is far removed from our contemporary experiences. Mayer brings the tragic love triangle to life as a "tableau vivant": during the prelude, an archaeologist from the early 20th century descends into a tomb. There he discovers relics of Aida's story, which are gradually brought to life.

The 2024/2025 Met season will be broadcast live on over 200 screens in Germany and Austria. Ticket sales have begun. The list of participating cinemas and further information can be found at www.metimkino.de.
