And the Oscar® goes to… CONCLAVE

Yesterday evening, the highly anticipated announcement of the Academy Award® winners took place, and CONCLAVE was among the recipients of one of the coveted Oscar® trophies. In the category of Writing (Adapted Screenplay), screenwriter Peter Straughan was honored with an award for his work on the film.

CONCLAVE, directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Edward Berger, is a visually powerful and atmospherically dense thriller that delves into one of the oldest and most mysterious rituals: the election of a new Pope. The film had its German cinema release on 21 November 2024 and has since gone on to attract nearly 900,000 viewers to theaters.

The outstanding ensemble cast is led by Oscar®-nominated British actor Ralph Fiennes, who delivers a standout performance as Cardinal Lawrence, the figure entrusted with the challenging task of overseeing the papal election. Joining Fiennes are other acclaimed actors such as Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, who bring depth and nuance to their respective roles.

As the doors to the Sistine Chapel close and the conclave begins, a complex power struggle unfolds, with Cardinal Lawrence finding himself at the center of a web of intrigues and corruption. The film not only explores the high-stakes political maneuverings but also uncovers a secret that threatens to shake the very foundations of the Church.

CONCLAVE's recognition at the Academy Awards underscores the film's cinematic excellence and its ability to captivate audiences with its gripping narrative and exceptional performances. The accolade is a testament to the creative vision of Edward Berger and the talented team behind this riveting exploration of one of the most significant religious events in the world.
